In a world that constantly disrupts traditional notions of stability and belonging, people often strive to find meaning and a sense of existence while seeking grounding and rootedness. Yet, in the face of modern societal fluidity, our identities are constantly shifting. Rather than searching for fixed answers, I choose to break free from an anthropocentric mindset, directing my focus towards other entities coexisting around us.
Primarily using oil as my creative medium, I investigate how plants, with their ability to thrive without any emotional or psychological disturbances, can guide us past the human-centered perspective. Therefore, my artwork goes beyond merely depicting plants; it is a journey into self-reflection centered on how to live outside of traditional social frameworks and boundaries. Choosing plants is also a reflection of my current mind state - I perceive myself as a plant, uncontrolled, unlabeled, and embracing the spontaneity that the environment brings into my life.
I do not choose specific plant species as my subjects. Instead, I rely on my instincts to focus on their temperament, allowing the diversity of plants to emerge naturally without constraints or definitions. In my works, the transparent layers interwoven among the plants symbolize how rapid social change and uncertainty overwhelm individuals, while the faintly visible plant forms reveal the process of resisting such an influence. Predominantly using dark colors like sap green and navy blue, I applied paint lightly on the canvas to convey the shared flowing nature between myself and the plants. Through my ongoing exploration of how plants inspire us to transcend social norms, I invite viewers to reconsider their approach to living in today’s ever-changing landscapes.
